A special thanks to WRCN Music Director Bob Goodman for sending in this
super photo of him in front of the WRCN/WRHF broadcast studios which,
at the time, were located in the back of the Flanders (Riverhead) Drive In.

Hi,
Great LI Radio site, brings back vivid memories.  I was fortunate to be a part of that landscape from 1972 - 75 with WHRF/WRCN and yes we could watch the movies from our parking lot.  I was the Music Director during that time and the station was owned by East Shore Broadcasting (Richard Adrian).  I started doing 6 - Midnight and then settled in at Mid Days during 74 / 75.  Our format transitioned from MOR to Top 40 AC during the Summer of '74 and I instituted a musical play list that featured oldies (flashbacks) every 15 minutes on the format clock.  We also tried to create a presence with our local news and lots of remotes ala LNG.

I also worked for WLIX 540 during 1975 / 76 when we were in a trailer across from Islip Speedway.  I did Mid Days.  Also worked at WYSP-FM Phila, KSURF, Los Angeles.  I've always been a Radio Junkie, that's how I found your site.  If you would like more info, I have many great memories to share.  By the way, I'm currently doing a weekend show on a College FM Station here in Southern California, pro bono.  We stream on the internet at the following link: http://www.ksbr.net/Jazz!FM885KSBR.ram?

More MEMORIES OF WRCN
By Matt Maloney

A concrete block shack on the grounds of the Riverhead Drive-In Movies that somehow managed to contain the AM transmitter; Studio A; Studio B; record library; newswire room; manager’s office; work/lounge area; and a bathroom.

Station Engineer Gene Pfeiffer’s trailer parked out back.

The directional AM towers right outside.

1 Of 3 Original WHRF AM Directional Towers

The remote FM tower on a hill in Manorville.

The “two wire feed” from the ABC News Network that sounded like a phone line because it was.

Owners Adrian and Putbrese – seldom seen.

Station Manager Mike Fischetti – who could do the Mr. Magoo voice but seldom did.

The Sales Manager who called himself the “Old Redhead” when he did the Sunday morning Polish Hour.

I was hired in Jan. ’74 to work the board, do DJ fill-ins, and a weekend air slot. By the time I left in August of that year, I had also... gotten to work again with my friend Bob Goodman, who I knew from our college radio station.

Gotten to work with Jim Genovese, a.k.a. Tony Mastrelli, who I had spent many nights on the phone with while he was on-air at WBAB and I was a radio-infatuated teen.

Met Jim Pierce, who amazed me that such a young guy could already be such a radio pro.

Filled in for Bruce Rector on his nostalgic “Guardian ‘Til Dawn”show (sponsored by Guardian Federal Savings.)

Filled in for Gene Pfeiffer on his C&W “Guardian Country” show.

Filled in for News Director Dave Schreiber when he was seriously injured in a car accident (from which he fully recovered and went on to work at WGLI.)

Had a daily air slot from six to midnight.

Sat on the fence outside the studio on more than one summer night watching the movie as the Beatles medley from Abbey Road, or something similarly long, played over the studio monitors and out the open door.

Had my night show’s format changed from free-form progressive to an oldies/current hit mix on a tight rotation.

Repeated our tag line “The Sounds of Summer ‘74” perhaps a thousand times.

Loved every last minute of it.
